Decade 2 of 5 • Sorrowful Mysteries

The Scourging at the Pillar

Spiritual Fruit: Mortification of the Senses & Purity

Biblical Text (John 19:1; Isaiah 53:5)
"Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. "He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.""

Contemplation on The Scourging at the Pillar

Jesus patiently suffers brutal physical scourging at the pillar for the sins of all humanity.

As we recite the ten Hail Marys of this decade, we fix our interior gaze upon this mystery of Christ's life. We ask for the grace to embody its spiritual fruit, Mortification of the Senses & Purity, in our daily lives.

Doxological Conclusion

Sealing the Decade with the Glory Be

At the close of the ten Hail Marys for this decade, we stand in spirit with the Blessed Mother and offer all our contemplation back to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with the Glory Be (Gloria Patri), acknowledging that all holiness flows from and returns to the Blessed Trinity.

Canonical English doxology prayer text used in liturgical and private devotion across the United States.
